Sleepwalks #2: Offshore in Margate with Cally Spooner

This is a day-long workshop led by Cally Spooner with performer, producer and performance curator Michelangelo Miccolis. The workshop will form part of Sleepwalks series organised by associates Melanie Wheeler and Coral Brookes exploring the role of fiction in relation to objects, place and the performative. This series runs across September and October and will include practical workshops and sessions including script writing, animation and performance.

Cally Spooner will deliver a workshop around Diffraction. Borrowing from classical physics; diffraction is a physical phenomenon that comes into being when a multitude of waves encounter an obstacle upon their path, and/or when these waves themselves overlap. When pushed to an extreme “we can understand diffraction patterns – as patterns of difference that make a difference – to be the fundamental constituents that make up the world” (Barad, 2007, p.72).

We will ask how the day to day management of our increasingly bio-political lives can be re-routed through exercises in mining, recording and performing language in tentacular, interruptive and diffractive ways.

OFFSHORE IN MARGATE is part of OFFSHORE— an itinerant performance company and pedagogical structure, currently being researched and developed by Cally Spooner. OFFSHORE is an exercise in drafting new vocabulary and terms of how to organise, write, and perform, arriving from literature, theatre, and a messy, unrequited love affair with philosophy.

Free to attend, everyone welcome, registration not required – just show up and take part.
