Young Associates Programme

In September 2019, we launched a new, free, year-long art and design programme in Margate, open to young people aged 16-18. The Young Associates Programme (YAP) is for young people across East Kent who show talent and/or interest in creative activities and want to consider art and design as a possible future as well as gain transferable skills.

The Young Associates Programme runs three days a week (Tuesday to Thursday) from our home at the Margate Adult Education Centre on Hawley Square. Students on the programme work towards a Level 2 diploma in art and design, alongside functional skills in maths and English as part of our Creative Careers module.

The programme is a place to develop knowledge and skills in art and design as well as to interact with world class artists, designers and industry professionals. Young Associates get regular opportunities to showcase their work and to develop creative projects in and around Margate.

The YAP tutors are artist Nicolas Deshayes, fashion director Cynthia Lawrence-John, graphic design studio Kellenberger–White, textile designer and printmaker Yemi Awosile, designers and makers Adam Willis and James Binning of the architecture collective Assemble, artist and musician Dan Scott and artist and filmmaker Adam Chodzko.

Young Associates have opportunities to work with local and national organisations. Organisations we have worked with so far include CITiZAN, Articulation, and UCA. There are also opportunities throughout the year to visit local and national galleries, museums, and offsite artmaking spaces.

We are working in partnership with Kent Community Learning and Skills who are coordinating all aspects of the art, design and functional skills’ qualification administration for the Young Associates Programme.

The Young Associates receive breakfast each day, including bread generously donated by Modern Provider and served by the Hot Meals Now Canteen on the ground floor of the Margate Adult Education Centre.

“YAP is a place where you can freely express yourself with art and be comfortable with what you do.”
– Chloe, 2019–2020 Young Associate
